Why Do I Keep Making Coffee Shirts
Julianne DishonghIf you've browsed Studio J Tees lately, you may have noticed something.
There are a lot of coffee-themed designs.
At first, I didn't think much about it. Then one day I looked around the shop and realized there were coffee shirts, coffee mugs, coffee quotes, coffee-loving animals, and enough caffeine-inspired humor to stock a small coffee shop gift store.
Which led me to a very important question:
Why do I keep making coffee shirts?
The funny thing is, I'm not even a huge coffee fanatic.
Honestly, my relationship with coffee is questionable at best. Give me a cold brew mixed with a protein shake, a frappuccino, or basically anything containing a generous amount of cream and sugar. Somewhere in there is a little coffee, and that's close enough for me.
Which raises an obvious question:
Why do I keep making coffee shirts?
I Didn't Mean To Become The Coffee Shirt Lady
Seriously.
Every time I sit down to create something new, I tell myself I'm going in a completely different direction.
Maybe I'll make a funny animal design.
Maybe something nostalgic for Gen X.
Maybe a sarcastic quote shirt.
And then somehow a coffee cup sneaks into the artwork and we're right back where we started.
At some point, I jokingly started calling myself "the coffee shirt lady." It wasn't intentional, but after enough coffee-themed designs appeared in the shop, I had to admit there might be a pattern.
The truth is, I finally realized that most of my coffee designs aren't really about coffee.
They're about people.
They're about those moments we all recognize:
-
Trying to function before the first cup.
-
Surviving a long workday.
-
Feeling slightly underpowered on a Monday morning.
-
Using humor to get through adulthood.
-
Wanting just a little peace and quiet before the world starts demanding things.
Coffee simply became the symbol for all of it.
Coffee Is Really About Personality
When I look at some of my favorite designs, I notice a pattern.
The Caffeine Master isn't really about becoming an expert coffee drinker. It's about reaching a level of wisdom where you understand that some problems are best solved after coffee.
The Honey Badger Chose Coffee design isn't about coffee either. It's about waking up, assessing the situation, and deciding that caffeine is the safest option for everyone involved.
Even designs like Coffee Is My Emotional Support Beverage aren't really celebrating coffee itself. They're celebrating that feeling of finding comfort in the little things that help us get through the day.
Other designs, like Fueled By Caffeine And Chaos, lean into the reality that sometimes we're all just trying to make it through the day with a little caffeine and a sense of humor.
That's probably why coffee keeps showing up in my designs. Not because I'm obsessed with coffee, but because these shirts capture feelings most of us can relate to.
They're relatable.
Most of us have experienced mornings where coffee felt less like a beverage and more like a life strategy.
The Coffee and Humor Connection
Studio J Tees has always been built around humor, personality, and the little everyday moments that make us laugh.
Whether it's a grumpy cat, a sarcastic frog, a Gen X joke, a panda that regrets seizing the day, or a honey badger clutching a cup of coffee, the goal is usually the same:
To create something that makes someone smile and say,
"Yep. That's me."
Coffee just happens to be one of the most universal ways people connect with that feeling.
You don't have to be a coffee expert to understand the joke.
You just have to be human.
A Few Favorite Coffee-Themed Designs
Over the years, coffee has quietly become one of the recurring themes at Studio J Tees.
A few favorites include:
Apparently I have a type.
So Will There Be More Coffee Shirts?
Probably.
I've stopped pretending otherwise.
At this point I've accepted that coffee-themed designs are simply part of the Studio J Tees personality.
And honestly, there are worse things to be known for than creating shirts that celebrate caffeine, humor, and surviving adulthood one cup at a time.
So if you're wondering whether another coffee design will eventually appear in the shop...
The answer is almost certainly yes.
Apparently, becoming the coffee shirt lady was my destiny all along.
